February’s Spotlight on The Wooden Nickel II

The Nickel, a staple in Dansville, has long been know for amazing burritos and a friendly atmosphere. When owners Tim and Miya Warvel and Ryan and Beth Carter purchased the property 18 months ago, they knew they had a solid place to grow from. Larry Arnett owned the property for 40 plus years, and created the Wooden Nickel’s enthusiastic fan base. Larry still regularly appears as a “Guest Cook” at the Nickel, often taking care of the Thursday Specials. The Dansville regulars appreciate being able to enjoy their old favorites, as well as trying some of the new menu items.
Miya Warvel shares that as they work to balance the well know favorites on the menu with new opportunities, the focus is on consistency and keeping it local. When possible, supplies are sourced locally. Michigan alcoholic beverages are served, and menu updates are based on what Dansville currently enjoys.
When asked about ideas for future development of the Nickel, Miya mentioned the possibility of building a brick structure that honors the original Wooden Nickel. She said it won’t be happening soon, but is one of the “down the road” ideas that has been considered. In the meantime, the owners will be striving to continue the Nickel’s long tradition of good food, good fun, and good friends! The hope is to develop programs and events that will also draw people from outside the community, and allow for growth.
Miya thinks the opportunity to help her good friend Larry with the much-loved Nickel has been amazing, and is very encouraged by the response of the community of Dansville to the change in ownership. She feels the slogan the Nickel uses also applies to Dansville. “Come as a guest, leave as a friend!”
